The Abbey of San Domenico
The Abbey of San Domenico lies on the outskirts of Sora, near the Fibreno river. It was founded in 1011 by San Domenico da Foligno, who dedicated it to Holy Mary, in the area previously occupied by a Roman necropolis.
According to some historians, near the abbey stood the villa where Marcus Tullius Cicero was born.
In 1222, the abbey was placed under the abbey of Casamari, founded by a group of monks from the monastery of San Domenico.
It was restored after the violent earthquake of 1915 which destroyed a great part of the building.
The church has three naves, ending in three semicircular apses, which have curvilinear cornices at the base taken from Roman mausoleums. The presbytery, preceded by a transept, is higher to leave space for the crypt below, the most characteristic space of the abbey complex.
The crypt was built with reused architectural elements from the Roman period; it has three naves marked by 16 marble columns, all different and taken from older buildings.

One of them has the inscription of a milestone of Emperor Maxentius (4th century AD). The 18th-century altar with the relics of St Dominic of Foligno is located in the apse, where part of the original opus sectile floor is preserved.
According to tradition, St Dominic died in the crypt in 1031 after lying down on a layer of ashes, as an act of extreme humility.
On the outside walls of the church there are some bas-reliefs from many funerary monuments dating back to Roman times, which were probably located along an ancient roadway on which the Abbey of San Domenico is located today.
