The Museum of Agricultural and Popular Tobacco Culture
The Museum of the Agricultural and Popular Culture of Tobacco is located in Pontecorvo, in the hamlet of Sant’Oliva. The collection displays the process of harvesting, production and sale of tobacco, which played a major role in Pontecorvo’s economy during the last century.
The Museum is divided into five thematic sections: The Vestibule; Land Regime and the Peasant World; Sharecropping; Tobacco Cultivation; From Production to Processing: the Tobacco Agency; Pontecorvo and History. Particular attention is paid to the social and cultural aspects of tobacco cultivation in the territory: rites, festivals and religious cults, oral culture and everyday objects, the role of women (“tabacchine”) and smugglers.
The museum also has a multi-purpose space for theatre workshops, conferences, temporary exhibitions and cultural events.
