WW II – World War II
Roccasecca
Cycle path of memory
It’s a cycling route that connects the Ponte delle Valli, along the Tracciolino road (Roccasecca), with the archaeological site of ancient Casinum (Cassino) with a length of about 26 kilometres.
The path crosses the places that in the spring of 1944 were the scene of bloody battles between the German army and the allied forces on the Gustav Line front. The project, promoted by the municipalities of Colle San Magno, Piedimonte San Germano, Roccasecca and Villa Santa Lucia, was realised on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Second World War with a contribution from the Lazio Region.
The route can be cycled in both directions: the west-east route (from Ponte delle Valli to Cassino) has no significant climbs, while the opposite route is more challenging.
The trail is enriched by the presence of directional arrows guiding the visitor and signposts with information panels illustrating the main wartime events in the area as well as the historical and artistic heritage of each municipality.
The entire itinerary has been divided into four routes: 1) from Tracciolino to the centre of Roccasecca, km 5; 2) from Roccasecca to Madonna dei Sette Dolori, km 6.5; 3) from Madonna dei Sette Dolori to Piedimonte San Germano and Villa Santa Lucia; 4) from Villa Santa Lucia to the Archaeological area of Cassino.
