The Railway Museum of the Liri Valley was opened in 2017 inside the Town Hall of Arce to tell the history of the territory through the Roccasecca-Avezzano railway line.

In the museum there are five models reproducing characteristic places of the approximately 79 km long railway line. In particular, the largest one (15 square metres) shows the station and railway yard of Arce, with a driving simulator.

The other models accurately reproduce the contour lines of the terrain and the scaled-down railway sites: Roccasecca, Fontana Liri Superiore, Arpino, and Pescocanale, with the famous Capistrello helical tunnel, one of the most important artefacts of early 20th century railway engineering.

All of the models are self-built and reduced to scale, made by two craftsmen with almost a year’s work.  Also part of the exhibition are models of the most frequently used machines in railway history, steam and electric, both Italian and foreign, as well as objects used by railway personnel.

The Museum also has a projection room with exclusive videos from the 1960s by the great expert engineer Renato Cesa De Marchi. The ‘Apassiferrati’ association, which set up and runs the Museum in agreement with the Municipality of Arce and the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio, organises events to promote the area, such as the hire of historical steam trains, the publication of historical texts and educational projects for schools.
